Your heart is such a precious organ. It works so very hard sending blood around your body. This blood then provides the body with the nutrients and all the oxygen that it requires.
So keeping your heart healthy is of paramount importance. There are several ways that this can be achieved.
Exercise assists in the improvement of your heart’s function. Not only that, but it also lowers blood pressure and blood cholesterol. Exercise helps to boost your energy levels. Your heart is forced to work that much harder if you are overweight.
The general exercise regime recommended is to try & have at least thirty minutes of physical exercise daily. We are only talking about moderate exercise! Nobody is expecting you to suddenly turn into an exercise fanatic overnight! The good point is that you do not even have to complete the full thirty minutes in one sitting; you could break it into smaller ten-minute sessions.
Your heart rate will benefit more from vigorous exercise, but walking briskly is also a great form of exercise for your heart. Exercise does not always have to include running. You need to choose a form of exercise that you know you will continue to do and to enjoy. Perhaps you can add more exercise to your daily routine by just taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to work rather than catching a bus or maybe taking a nice walk with a friend who could benefit from some exercise too.
Another way of keeping a healthy heart is to eat sensibly. You need a low fat diet that is also low in salt & cholesterol. You are seeking a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, grains & fibre.
The trick to following a diet successfully is to not be too hard on yourself. Your heart will not mind if you consume the odd piece of pizza or sneak in a burger once in awhile. Have the healthy salad with a slice of pizza instead of the pizza with fries, or eat the burger but refuse the side order of fries and opt for the fruit salad for desert rather than the chocolate eclair.
Too much fat in your diet can seriously harm your heart so keep to a sensible diet and your heart will maintain its health.
Controlling your blood pressure is another factor for a healthy heart. If you have high blood pressure, your heart works harder and it hardens the walls of the arteries. This increases the risks of heart disease & stroke.
Have regular readings of your blood pressure so you can monitor it and eat healthily. Do not consume too much red meat or sugary foods and drinks. Try not to become stressed, as this increases your blood pressure. Take up a relaxing hobby such as yoga. This is brilliant for your heart as it keeps you calm & focused.
