There's a saying in Chinese medicine: "Above all else, protect your digestion.” Although we think of the gastrointestinal tract as the place where food is digested, it’s a very active immune center. It contains more than 80% of our antibody producing cells. Hence, it is vitally important to protect your digestion in order to protect your health.
What is Digestion?
Digestion is the processing of foods and fluids for use in the body by the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract).
Why Protect Your Digestion?
If you aren't digesting foods properly, they aren’t turning into healthy blood and energy needed for your organs to function properly. Your organs cannot perform their jobs well under these circumstances. Your heart and lungs can't function. Your kidneys, bladder, liver, gall bladder, stomach and intestines can't do their jobs.
Your immune system can’t protect you from cancer and other illnesses and diseases. You may develop vitamin deficiencies or malnutrition, because your body and organs are unable to get anything from your blood to sustain them.
If you're not digesting fluids correctly, they collect in your tissues, congeal, and this leads to obesity, depression, urinary infections, dementia, seizures, tumors, headaches, allergies, and breathing problems.
The digestion of food and fluids includes elimination, so if your digestion is not working well, you will have problems with constipation, diarrhea, and urination.
Digestion is extremely important. Without it, your food and drink would simply sit in your digestive tract like a lump of clay - doing nothing.
